A few months ago, dengue cases made headlines, with Quezon City even declaring an official outbreak. While things have calmed down since then, we’re now heading into the wetter months. Could these cases return?
Protecting your hotel from mosquitoes keeps your guests safe and comfortable throughout their stay. Here’s what you need to know to stay ahead this mosquito season.

Dengue Mosquitoes Multiply Fast During Rainy Season
PAGASA has officially declared June as the start of the rainy season for 2025. And while the cooler evenings may be a welcome change from the unbearable heat of the past months, hotel managers should be on their guard because mosquitoes thrive in this kind of weather.
Frequent rains and flooding create favorable conditions for mosquitoes to breed. The more it rains and floods, the more stagnant water gets left behind, and that’s exactly what dengue-carrying mosquitoes look for.
You might assume that solid drainage is enough. But here’s the catch: Aedes aegypti (dengue mosquitoes) don’t need dirty, murky water. They prefer clean water, and it doesn’t take much. Sometimes, just a bottle-cap amount on your rooftop bar, planters and flower pots, or outdoor lounge is more than enough for them to start laying eggs.
Areas in Your Hotel That Are Actually Breeding Grounds for Mosquitoes

Aedes mosquitoes are experts at finding hidden pockets to lay their eggs. Even when things appear clean, certain areas may be holding enough water that invites them to breed.
In most cases, mosquito breeding spots fall into three categories: structural, hygienic, and aesthetic.
Structural
These are areas where water builds up because of how the space is designed. You might not notice them until it rains and water starts to pool.
Clogged roof gutters are a common find during our inspections, with leaves and debris blocking the drainage. Flat ledges, open rooftops, and uneven surfaces can also hold water if they’re not sloped properly.
Structural risks also include areas left in disrepair. In hotels, one often overlooked spot is the Retail Delivery Unit or loading dock. Over time, these spaces wear down, develop small gaps, and turn into mosquito magnets, especially because they’re usually dark and ignored.
These areas are easy to miss, which is exactly why mosquitoes thrive in them.
Hygienic
This has less to do with cleanliness and more to do with how daily routines are carried out. Even well-kept areas can become breeding grounds when maintenance is overlooked.
For example: mop buckets left half-full on a housekeeping cart or discarded bottles and plastic cups that collect rainwater in a back corner. These items are not part of the structure, but when left sitting in the open, they give mosquitoes exactly what they need to breed.
Aesthetic
Lastly, but often missed are aesthetic elements. It’s with good intent that hotel spaces are made warm and inviting. But when these design features aren’t maintained, they can also invite mosquitoes in.
Planters without drainage, decorative ponds, or even garden sculptures can collect water after a downpour. And if the flow is weak or clogged, these elements can quickly become unintended mosquito breeding grounds.
TRAIN of Thoughts: Inactive Mosquito Eggs Can Hatch When the Rainy Season Arrives

Here’s an interesting insight from our Training and Innovations Department: mosquito eggs can wait.
Even without water, Aedes aegypti eggs can stay dormant for weeks or even months. They can stick to the sides of containers, planters, or any damp surface, waiting for the next rain to come.
But here’s the catch. Studies show that these dormant eggs often produce weaker larvae. That’s because they use up most of their nutrients just to stay alive. As a result, their development is slower and they are less robust than freshly laid eggs.
This insight gives us an edge. The start of the rainy season is the best time to strike with larviciding. This is where a planned, professional mosquito population control becomes valuable.
3 Effective Mosquito Control for the Rainy Season

ENTECH’s Integrated Pest Management programs are designed to tackle mosquitoes and other pests across their lifecycle by tackling their behavior, seasonal patterns, and other environmental factors to provide the best possible defense for your property.
Our team is equipped to carry out precise strategies that help hotels and resorts stay ahead of infestations before they begin. For mosquito control, we use 3 methods to manage them.
1. Larviciding
Larviciding targets mosquito larvae before they develop into biting adults. We apply larvicides directly to breeding areas such as gutters, drains, or anywhere water tends to collect.
What makes this effective is timing. Our technicians assess not just where water sits, but when mosquitoes are most likely to lay eggs. This includes structural areas like clogged gutters and aesthetic features like planters.
2. Mist Blowing
Mist blowing is used to control adult mosquitoes in open spaces where guests often gather.
Mosquitoes are most active 2 hours after sunrise and 2 hours before sunset, and that’s when mist blowing is done. A fine mist is dispersed into shrubs, hedges, shaded corners, cracks and crevices, reaching the places mosquitoes use for cover.
This is an effective way to repel, incapacitate and eliminate mosquitoes if you have aesthetic choices like dense greenery. Elements that look great but can become hiding spots if not treated regularly.
3. Misting
For indoor or semi-enclosed spaces like hallways, lounges, and entryways, our team uses misting to eradicate mosquitoes.
Our low-volume mist moves through these areas during treatment, knocking down mosquitoes without leaving any strong residue. It’s a discreet but effective way to support your hygienic routine, especially in areas that don’t always get daily attention.
